The next step would be to evaluate this list using the eyes of science. For example, if a sporting event in one the list this would fall into a biology category or a physics category. Once the list is evaluated have the student decide if they should pursue a physical science or life science science fair project. Many of the items on the list will fall into one category of the other.

This process of determining if a student wants to pursue a physical science or life science science fair project will help them narrow the field of topics. By encouraging them to make the list and evaluate it, you have already invested them in the decision. This is a much better strategy that having the teacher choose, or worse yet assign, the topics. One student may have no interest in sports and another may have no interest in plant life. Once the students have chosen between the large categories of a physical science or life science science fair project, the next step may involve a couple of student and teacher meetings. The teacher should be able to guide and suggest ways of perceiving their chosen topic that will inspire ideas for the student. Record keeping is of utmost importance and accurate record keeping can and will make the difference between work that is successfully continued by a scientist’s successors and work that is not successfully continued.

In the field of science, all of us stand on the shoulders of giants. In other words, we all learn from our predecessors and build on what they have taught us. However, we are able to learn only from those who have successfully transcribed their knowledge in an accurate and concise fashion so as to facilitate the propagation of the knowledge to those who follow.

Accurate lab notes are a must. Accurate lab notes will have a variety of properties including but not limited to:

An accurate introductory description of the process or processes being studied. For the information following the introduction to be understood in it’s proper context, an accurate introductory description has to be described clearly. Why is this subject of interest? What is the current understanding of the subject and why does it need to be studied further? What questions need to be answered before true progress can be made? All of these question should be covered in the introduction.

Clear and concise methodology. The work that is performed or is to be performed must be clearly spelled out for those reading the notes to understand the important steps to be taken to repeat and confirm the results. Each step must be labeled in detail and must be done so in a way that can be repeated using the notes alone. This is important if results are to be duplicated.

Well documented and understandable results. The results that are discovered by the initial experimenter should also be spelled out in clear detail as they may differ from the results obtained by those following them and trying to repeat their work. If results differ, this should be clearly noted by the scientists attempting to repeat the work and differences in results should also be clearly noted.

Objective conclusions. Conclusions should be recorded and based on evidence and results obtained. If data or results have discrepancies, these should be noted and discussed in the conclusion.

It seems that wearable technology is going to be the in thing in the next few years. During the 2012 Google I/O, a major theme that was being pushed would be technology that would be wearable by the consumers.

Instead of having to bring along a separate device in bags or pant pockets, it seems that Google (and other tech companies for that matter) would want users to actually wear them as part of their outfit. Perhaps the idea behind this is that it would make the device much more embedded into the lives of its users.

Historical Use:

Industry observers mentioned that the idea is not that far-fetched. In fact, the military would already have prototypes and actual products of utilizing wearable computers. Usually, these military themed devices are used either for their communications capabilities or their GPS functionalities. However, the trend is to slowly bring these military devices into use for regular consumers.

In fact, there are now more companies who have tried to integrate their devices into more wearable designs. For example, MIT researches have long been looking at how they can manufacture wearable computers. Another example would be on how Apples iPod Nano has now made a wristband like peripheral which you could use to wear the highly capable device as a wrist watch.

Googles take:

Not one to be left behind by technology, Google also has something up their sleeve. They have previously announced the Google Glass. Google glass is a wearable device that would provide its users with a video game like heads up display while they are doing their everyday tasks.

Some analysts believe that Googles involvement in wearable technology would help push forward the acceptance of wearable devices. As of now, the use and acceptance of it is usually limited to the aforementioned military uses as well as to some of the rich and tech savvy people.

Make Science Exciting

A textbook works great as a guide to learning science, but should try and do more to make science really exciting. Science experiments are by far the best way to get a child interested in science.

One fun and simple experiment you can try is to put a small seed in a cup, add some soil and watch the process of life as it grows and sprouts. Out of all the 2nd grade science curriculum on the market, my absolute favorite is Apologia Science. I have found Apologia to be the best at really making science fun and engaging for children.

Children love to be engaged, especially 2nd graders. Let a chick hatch from an egg and let your child care for and observe it. This will not only help your child learn about science, but also about life itself.

Children Need to Be Allowed to Think for Themselves

When a child asks you how something works, your natural instinct is to explain it to just explain it all to them. Instead of just telling them the answer. Why not help them discover the answer themselves? This way you can teach your child how to think for themselves and learn the answer at the same time.

For example, if your child is curious about what certain fish eat, you can ask a question like, ‘Well, what kind of snack do you think this fish likes the best?’ Tell them a bit about what is available under the water and let them discuss it with you.
